Head of State is a political comedy directed by and starring Chris Rock. The film follows Mays Gilliam, a down-on-his-luck alderman from a poor district in Washington, D.C. Mays is thrust into the national spotlight when, after the sudden death of a presidential candidate, he is chosen to run for president on the Democratic ticket. Despite lacking political experience, Mays is given the opportunity due to his unique background and the need for a fresh, unconventional candidate.

Supported by his savvy older brother Mitch (Bernie Mac) and a campaign manager, Martin (Dylan Baker), Mays embarks on his political journey with an unpolished, no-nonsense approach. His candidacy initially shocks the public, but as the campaign unfolds, Mays’s candid style, sharp wit, and authenticity win over the American people. He becomes a symbol of change in a political system often seen as corrupt and disconnected from the average citizen.
Throughout the film, Mays struggles with the challenges of political life, including media manipulation and the demands of the campaign trail. Along the way, he also forms a romantic relationship with his campaign staffer, Kim (Robin Givens). Mays’s charisma and humor eventually position him as a serious contender, offering a fresh perspective on what it means to be a leader.
Head of State blends political satire with humor, offering a lighthearted yet critical commentary on American politics. The film showcases themes of identity, ambition, and the power of ordinary people to make an impact on the political system, all while delivering laughs and memorable moments.
