Journey to the West: Conquering the Demons is a fantasy adventure comedy directed by Stephen Chow and Derek Kwok. Inspired by the classic Chinese novel Journey to the West, the film offers a playful and unconventional reimagining of the story’s origins.

The protagonist is Tang Sanzang, a young Buddhist demon hunter who believes that every creature, no matter how terrifying, still possesses goodness within. Rather than relying on violence, he tries to use compassion, Buddhist chants, and forgiveness to purify demons. Early in the film, he attempts to help villagers rid themselves of a monstrous river demon disguised as a giant fish. Despite his failures and near-death experiences, his sincerity and bravery slowly gain the respect of others.
Tang crosses paths with Miss Duan, a fierce female demon hunter who admires his moral conviction and secretly develops feelings for him. Together, they confront increasingly powerful demons, including a ferocious pig spirit. The most dangerous challenge comes when Tang unwittingly frees Sun Wukong, the Monkey King. At first appearing harmless, Wukong soon reveals himself as a cunning and ruthless trickster. He massacres Miss Duan and her team, testing Tang’s faith and resolve.
Devastated but determined, Tang finally realizes that true conquest of demons requires both compassion and divine strength. With help from Buddha, he subdues Wukong, who becomes his disciple. The film ends with Tang, now accompanied by Wukong, Pigsy, and Sandy, beginning the legendary pilgrimage to the West.
Blending slapstick humor, romance, and spectacular CGI action, the movie balances dark, grotesque sequences with heartfelt moments. More than just a monster film, it explores themes of love, sacrifice, and the Buddhist path to enlightenment, while setting the stage for the epic saga of Tang Sanzang and his disciples.
